Global contractors and vendors using cutting edge technologies to create “The stores of future”. What are your thoughts on this?
Saudi Arabia is rapidly becoming a global hub for futuristic retail development, driven by mega-projects like NEOM and Qiddiya. Global contractors are leveraging AI, IoT, and immersive technologies to create intelligent, adaptive retail environments. These “stores of the future” are not just about automation, they’re about creating seamless, personalized, and sustainable experiences. RICS supports this transformation by promoting international standards and ethical practices that ensure innovation aligns with quality and accountability.
What’s your take on mall construction and management when we say “Sustainability is becoming a non-negotiable”?
Sustainability is now a foundational pillar in Saudi Arabia’s construction sector, especially under Vision 2030. RICS emphasizes whole-life carbon assessments and sustainable urban development, urging industry leaders to reduce environmental impact and adopt green building practices 2. Malls are evolving into energy-efficient, mixed-use ecosystems that prioritize water conservation, renewable energy, and smart waste management. This shift is not only environmentally responsible but also economically strategic, as consumers increasingly favour eco-conscious brands and spaces.
Share your thoughts on “Vision 2030” in terms of mall management.
Vision 2030 is reshaping the Kingdom’s retail landscape by positioning malls as lifestyle and cultural hubs. With over 4.9 million m² of new retail space planned across major cities, including Riyadh’s SAR 17.5 billion “Mall of Saudi” project, the focus is on integrating entertainment, hospitality, and digital innovation 3. RICS is actively involved in supporting this transformation by advising on regulatory frameworks and professional standards that ensure quality, transparency, and sustainability in mall development.
What’s the biggest challenge you see for customer experience when aligning their expectations with your transformation?
The key challenge is managing the pace of change. While customers are eager for innovation, they also expect intuitive, inclusive experiences. As malls integrate smart technologies and new formats like open-air lifestyle centers, it’s crucial to maintain accessibility and cultural relevance. RICS advocates for user-centric design and stakeholder engagement to ensure that transformation enhances—not alienates—the customer journey.
